* The Art of Surfing *

Many moons ago, Bali was the whispered destination of an intrepid few daring enough to chart new turquoise territory. Each surf was a true adventure, start to finish, and eventually the legendary director Alby Falzon’s 1971 film “Morning of the Earth” put the island—and Uluwatu—on the map as a mecca for serious surfers seeking pristine barrels. Hawaiian pioneer Gerry Lopez came, and more followed, eager to ride the surreal surf down at Ulus. And the legend grew…

Several decades later, a couple surfers who had made their own pilgrimages to Bali were inspired to create a physical space celebrating the contagious stoke of surfing and its singular culture with authenticity. In 2009, Drifter Surf was born as an independent retail store and cafe for surf and outdoor essentials plus a label of goods featuring original artwork by the likes of icons including Chris Del Moro and Andy Davis.

As the very first specialty surf shop and brand to come out of Bali, Indonesia, we have always danced to the beat of our own drum, with a left-of-center approach to a concept we call: The Art of Surfing.

Indeed, since we opened the doors to our first shop in Seminyak, the concept was to build a family-owned, surfer-operated business that put an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, eclectic design and surfing, first and foremost. The space is filled with one of a kind surfboards from legendary explorers/shapers like Terry Fitzgerald, Gerry Lopez, Dick Brewer, and many others, making Drifter feel almost like a museum of surf exploration history. A deep selection of handpicked books for travelers craving a break from their devices rounded out the offerings of the shop and established Drifter as the place to grab a coffee and talk story with fellow surfers.

With another location in Uluwatu (even closer to the surf!) Drifter offers a safe space for a community that has a greater appreciation of the world around us; a place for a tribe that journeys beyond the beaten track, finds sanctuary in Nature, embarks on a permanent pursuit of the experiential.

Over the years, we have been steadily building our own line—Drifter Surf—and have made great strides in building an in-house brand to suit the needs of the complete waterperson. Our line reveals the deep passion felt by sea lovers across the globe for not only wave riding but all pursuits that happen in and around the ocean, such as spearfishing and sustainable living.

Our family-run surf brand, with locations in Seminyak and Uluwatu, now sells apparel far beyond the island, spreading ocean devotion above and below the surface. Family-owned and surfer-operated, devoted to protecting our oceans and our precious watersheds, Drifter remains an eclectic band of wave riders, adventure seekers and curious artists that travel and sail the globe looking for waves and connections…
